How PurrJung Works

The science behind how we figure out your cat's personality

1 Overview

PurrJung is a cat personality assessment that sorts cats into 16 distinct personality types based on four behavioral dimensions. The test asks 16 questions (4 per dimension) about your cat's everyday behaviors and preferences. For each question, you place your cat on a spectrum between two opposite traits -- like "greets every visitor at the door" vs "hides under the bed when the doorbell rings."

2 The Four Dimensions

E / I Social vs Solitary

E (Social): Greets visitors, follows you room to room, enjoys being around other pets.
I (Solitary): Picks one favorite human, naps in private spots, needs recharge time after guests leave.

S / N Routine vs Novelty

S (Routine): Eats at the same time daily, sleeps in the same spot, suspicious of new furniture.
N (Novelty): Investigates every delivery box, adapts quickly to new homes, bored by old toys.

T / F Independent vs Bonded

T (Independent): Handles alone time fine, doesn't need lap time, makes own decisions about where to be.
F (Bonded): Follows your mood, comes when you're sad, waits by the door when you leave.

J / P Structured vs Spontaneous

J (Structured): Reminds you it's dinner time, predictable daily routine, prefers things in their place.
P (Spontaneous): 3am zoomies, eats whenever, surprises you with random bursts of affection or mischief.

3 How Scoring Works

Each question gives you a spectrum between two cat behaviors. You pick where your cat falls on a 1-5 scale:

1 2 3 4 5
A bit of both
Strongly left trait Strongly right trait

For each dimension, the 4 question scores are added up, giving a range of 4-20. The midpoint (12) determines the letter:

Score ≤ 12 E, S, T, or J
Score > 12 I, N, F, or P

The percentage in your results shows how strongly your cat leans toward one side -- 90% means a clear preference, 55% means your cat is pretty balanced on that dimension.

4 Scientific Foundation

PurrJung draws on established research in both human and animal personality psychology:

The Feline Five

Research by Litchfield et al. (2017) at the University of South Australia identified five core personality traits in cats: Neuroticism, Extraversion, Dominance, Impulsiveness, and Agreeableness. This peer-reviewed study surveyed over 2,800 cats and established a scientific basis for feline personality assessment.

MBTI-Style Framework

PurrJung adapts the four-dimension typology (similar to Myers-Briggs) to create 16 distinct cat personalities. While MBTI measures human cognitive preferences, our dimensions focus on observable feline behaviors -- things you can actually watch your cat do every day.

PurrJung is designed for entertainment and education. While grounded in behavioral observation principles, it is not a clinical diagnostic tool.

PurrJung is a sub-project of OpenJung.org, an open-source initiative making personality psychology accessible and fun for everyone.

5 Tips for Accurate Results

  • Think about your cat's typical behavior, not just recent or unusual incidents
  • Consider how your cat behaves in familiar, comfortable settings
  • If unsure, choose the middle option (3) rather than guessing
  • Cats over 1 year old have more stable personalities for assessment
  • You can retake the test as you observe more of your cat's behaviors
