Protection, inflammation and immune memory
Does inflammation always mean an infection is present?
Immunity is sometimes described as one dial that should always be turned up. A useful defense must instead recognize a problem, respond appropriately and limit damage to the body itself.

A rapid response to disturbance
Physical barriers and innate immune responses provide early protection. Cells recognize signals of microbes or tissue damage and recruit other cells. Inflammation organizes responses and the clearing of damaged material. Because injury as well as infection can trigger it, inflammation describes a response, not one particular cause. The same word can therefore appear in explanations of very different illnesses.

Specific recognition can leave a memory
Adaptive immunity involves lymphocytes recognizing particular targets. B cells can become antibody-producing cells; T cells help coordinate responses and deal with affected cells. Some persist as memory cells, supporting a response to a later encounter. Innate and adaptive defenses cooperate: information and signals pass between them rather than each system working alone in a fixed sequence.

Stronger is not always better
Immune responses need regulation. Excessive or misdirected activity can injure tissue, and an allergic response can occur without an invading pathogen. In feline asthma, such responses can contribute to airway inflammation and narrowing. Ask what triggered the response and how it affects function, rather than assuming every problem calls for increasing immune activity.

No. It describes the tissue’s response, not necessarily its trigger. Allergic and infectious processes are different possibilities. Distinguishing them requires clinical evidence; the word inflammation alone does not determine a suitable treatment.
