Water, kidneys and the work of recovery
Why can a cat pass more urine and still lose too much water?
It is tempting to picture the kidneys as a drain. A better starting point is a system that filters fluid, then selectively recovers much of what the body still needs.

Filtering is only the beginning
A nephron is a kidney’s microscopic working unit. Its glomerulus filters fluid and small dissolved substances from blood; the following tubules adjust that fluid. Reabsorption returns water and useful substances to the circulation, while secretion moves certain substances into forming urine. Final urine is the result of this processing, not simply everything that was initially filtered.

Kidneys also communicate with the body
Kidneys help regulate water, electrolytes and acid–base balance. They also contribute to blood-pressure regulation and produce erythropoietin, a signal supporting red blood cell production. These connections explain why a kidney disorder can have effects beyond the litter box, including changes in circulation or the blood’s oxygen-carrying capacity. An organ’s location does not limit the reach of its work.

Quantity and concentration ask different questions
When urine cannot be concentrated effectively, more water may leave the body and thirst can increase to compensate. Passing urine does not prove normal renal function. Glucose-related water loss in diabetes is another route to increased urination. Blood results, urine findings, hydration and history must be considered together; urine quantity alone cannot distinguish all these processes.

Three terms to keep
- Nephron
- A microscopic unit that filters blood and processes the resulting fluid.
- Reabsorption
- Returning water or dissolved substances from kidney tubules to blood.
- Urine specific gravity
- A measure related to urine concentration, interpreted alongside hydration and other findings.
Pause and reason it through
Two cats drink more water. Must the underlying mechanism be the same?
Read the explanation
No. Impaired urine concentration and glucose-related water loss are two different examples. Drinking alone cannot decide between them, and other explanations remain possible. Similar observations need not share a cause.
