The journey of an oxygen molecule
Once air reaches the lungs, is its journey finished?
A resting cat’s chest rises and falls. That is the visible beginning of a longer process: oxygen must still cross a surface, travel in blood and reach cells.

A simplified concept map. The body has many interacting pathways, not a single straight line.
Move air, then exchange gases
Branching airways carry air to tiny sacs called alveoli. Across the thin boundary between these sacs and nearby capillaries, oxygen enters blood and carbon dioxide moves toward the air. Ventilation means moving air; gas exchange means transfer across that boundary. Moving air and transferring oxygen are related functions, but they are not the same step.

A carrier needs a circulation
Most oxygen in blood attaches to hemoglobin inside red blood cells. The heart and blood vessels move blood between lungs and tissues. Anemia reduces oxygen-carrying capacity; impaired circulation can limit delivery even when air reaches the lungs. Respiratory function therefore depends on cooperation with blood and circulation, not only on what happens inside the chest.

Visible effort does not identify a cause
Narrowed airways, damaged exchange surfaces, reduced carrying capacity and inadequate blood flow are different ways to disrupt this journey. In feline asthma, airway inflammation and narrowing can make breathing difficult. A breathing pattern alone cannot distinguish all these causes. Difficulty breathing requires urgent veterinary attention, rather than completing a reading exercise first.

Yes. Delivery also depends on red blood cells and blood flow. This explains why a veterinarian may investigate several systems for one visible sign; it does not identify which system is responsible in an individual cat.
